Its core function is to convert engine mechanical energy into hydraulic energy and supply high-pressure oil flow to the steering gear and steering cylinders, enabling flexible, light, and reliable steering control.
Key functions include:
- Power source – Driven by the engine through the torque converter transfer gear, it rotates at high speed, draws in hydraulic oil, pressurizes it, and delivers high-pressure oil to the steering system.
- Steering control – High-pressure oil is distributed by the steering gear into the steering cylinder, pushing the piston rod to extend or retract, which turns the wheels or articulates the frame for left and right steering.
- Steering priority – Through a priority valve or flow amplifier valve, the steering system receives priority hydraulic oil. When flow is insufficient, all flow is supplied to steering; when flow is sufficient, excess oil merges into the working system (boom, bucket cylinders) to improve efficiency.
- Emergency steering – If the engine stops or the pump fails, the cycloid pin wheel pair inside the steering gear can act as a manual pump, allowing manual steering effort to draw and pressurize oil into the cylinder for emergency steering.
- Stable flow output – When engine speed changes, a flow amplifier valve or stable flow divider helps regulate flow to the steering cylinder, maintaining stable steering speed.
